The second annual SJHL/MJHL Showcase in Regina is in the books, and once again, the teams from Saskatchewan winning the majority of the games. After the three games Tuesday, Saskatchewan won four of the six games played between the talented teams selected from the top players from both leagues.

The day started out Tuesday with the second game between the two games with players who were born in 2000 or later. Dubbed the ‘Young Guns’ game, Team Schwartz from the SJHL was looking to avenge their shootout loss to the MJHL’s Team Garbutt on Monday.

The SJHL would come out on top in the game, picking up a 4-2 victory.

The SJHL squad dominated the scoreboard for much of the game, building up a 4-0 lead after 40 minutes of play. The goals were scored by Nipawin’s Jaxsen Wiebe, Tyson Janzen of the Yorkton Terriers, Melfort’s Parker Fofonoff and Humboldt’s Chase Felgueiras.

Team Garbutt replied with two goals in the third period, with Grady Hobbs of the Dauphin Kings and Owen Murray of the Portage Terriers beating goaltender Riley Kohonick. The Notre Dame netminder turned away 37 of the 39 shots he faced in the game.

The next game was between Team Mitchell from the SJHL, and Team Belfour of the MJHL. Kunitz had won their game Monday over Team Zajac, while Team Belfour was looking to bounce back from a loss to Team Kunitz.

It would be Team Belfour from start to finish in the game, as they skated to a 4-0 shutout of the talented SJHL team. Isaac Labelle from the Waywayseecappo Wolverines stopped all 30 shots fired his way to earn the shutout.

Team Mitchell went 0-for-6 on the power play in the game, as they were unable to solve the Manitoba goaltender.

At the other end, Team Belfour had goals from Brett Namaka (Selkirk Steelers), Kolten Kanaski (Virden Oil Capitals), Griffin Leonard (Winkler Flyers) and Ocean Wiesblatt (Portage Terriers).

The showcase wrapped up with a game between Team Kunitz and Team Zajac. The game looke dlike it would be a battle between two of the best 19-year-old goalie sin Canada, with Patrick Pugliese (Nipawin Hawks) in net for Team Kunitz, and Matt Radomsky (Steinbach Pistons) in goal for Team Zajac. It would be anything but, as Team Kunitz skated to an 8-1 win.

The game would be close through the first two periods, with Flin Flon’s Caleb Moretz and Nate Hooper scoring for the SJHL squad, and Steinbach Piston forward Brendan Martin tallying for the MJHL.

It all changed in the third period, as Battlefords Macgregor Sinclair scored 32 seconds into the third period. Then, a flurry of goals in 2:04 for Team Kunitz. Jordan Simoneau (Nipawin Hawks), Daylan Marchi (Flin Flon Bombers), Hooper, and Sinclair scored in the span.

The scoring was rounded out by a goal from Chrystopher Collin (Flin Flon Bombers) with 90 seconds remaining.

Overall, the showcase is once again being touted as a success. Attendance was strong at the six game event, with crowds coming out for the games which were all played during the day for the most part.

It is expected the two leagues will again partner for the showcase in 2020, again in Regina.

Until then, the next time players from the SJHL and MJHL will meet up will be in the Anavet Cup playoffs, the winner of which will advance to the RBC Cup.
