Over a hundred athletes were at the Weyburn Comprehensive School Saturday for a Special Olympics floor hockey tournament.

The tournament featured teams from Humboldt, Prince Albert, Nipawin, Regina, Saskatoon, southwest Saskatchewan, and Weyburn playing in two divisions. The athletes from Weyburn played in the tournament on the teams from Nipawin and Prince Albert, as well as Saskatoon, to ensure all the teams would have enough players to participate.

In the B Division, Prince Albert won the gold medal, beating a combined Weyburn/Nipawin 10-4 in the final. The Prince Albert team featured Dennis Whitrow, Aerial Roberts and Antonius Quist from Weyburn, while Nipawin had Rob Janke, Leah Whitrow and Eli Pick on their squad.

On the C side, the Moose Jaw/Swift Current team from the southwest beat the combined Weyburn Prince Albert team 6-0 in the gold medal game. Weyburn's Riley Wilson, Vance Bashforth, Stephanie Guest and Jordan Williams played for the Prince Albert team. Saskatoon, who won the C division bronze medal, featured Trevor Armstrong, Chris Keller and Josh Baun from Weyburn.

The tournament had a number of special guests attending, including Weyburn mayor Marcel Roy, and New York Giants offensive lineman Brett Jones. At the end of the tournament, the Weyburn Young Fellows presented a cheque for $500 to Weyburn Special Olympics.
