Weyburn will be hosting Special Olympics Floor Hockey teams from across the province for a tournament Saturday. The teams will be playing at the Weyburn Comprehensive School. There are eight teams competing across two divisions. The tournament opens at 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning, and continues through until 5:00 p.m., with a banquet and dance for the athletes to follow.

Lynn Quist is with Weyburn Special Olympics, and helped organize the event. She explained the Weyburn team won’t be playing as it’s own group Saturday, as they will be helping ensure other teams can participate as well.

“We’re going to share our players with the other teams,” Quist said. “There will be some players on the Saskatoon team, there will be some players helping out the Prince Albert team, and there will be some players helping a Nipawin team.” The decision was made with nine teams registered, but concerns the three teams coming from up north may not have enough players to participate.

There will be a number of special guests at the tournament as well, including Derek Whitehead. A veteran referee with the Special Olympics floor hockey program, he will also be the referee in chief for the International Special Olympics floor hockey tournament later this year in Austria.
