The Weyburn Beavers had their season-opening, franchise-record winning streak come to a halt Tuesday night. They fell 6-5 to the Millionaires in Melville. It is the first loss the team has suffered on the season, after starting out 13-0.

The Beavers found themselves in a familiar situation, down late in the game, as Melville entered the eighth inning with a 6-1 lead. A pair of two-run home runs, one from Keaton Greenwalt and the other from Corey Harrell, pulled Weyburn within one run. In the top of the ninth, however, the Beavers were unable to muster anything against Melville closer David Flores.

“I thought the guys battled all game, just didn’t get enough in the middle innings, and just came up a little bit short,” said Beavers head coach Phil Curtis.

The Beavers were the first on the board, as lead-off batter Corey Wheaton took the first pitch of the game and put it over the fence. It was the first home run of the season for the Scottsdale, AZ native.

The Millionaires would tie the game up in the bottom of the first with an RBI double by Ryan Tackett. They added to the lead when in the third when Tackett hit a three-run homer off Beavers starter Reid Wall.

Wall would go seven innings and was tagged with the loss. He allowed six runs over the time, while striking out seven, and walking just one. Dalton Ross pitched the eighth inning for Weyburn, striking out two and allowing just one hit.

In the seventh inning, Melville picked up two more runs. The first was a solo home run from Kade Wallace. Chandler Hughes then drove in a run with an RBI single.

In the top of the eighth inning, the rally started for the Beavers as the Millionaires put in a relief pitcher, with Taylor Roberge replacing Tyler Ulrich.

It started with a two-out single to right by Wheaton. Then, the first pitch faced by Greenwalt went yard, pulling Weyburn to within three of the Millionaires.

The next batter, Cam Williams reached base with a single. Harrell then hit his third home run of the season, pulling the Beavers within one, heading into the ninth inning.

In the final inning, though, the Beavers were unable to complete the comeback, like they had done so many times before on their streak.

The Beavers still stand first in the East Division, with a five-game lead over the Moose Jaw Miller Express. They are also first overall in the WMBL, with a two-game edge over the Medicine Hat Mavericks.

It will be a short turnaround for Weyburn and Melville. The two teams will meet again Wednesday morning at Pirie Field in Melville, with the first pitch just after 11:00 a.m.
