It was a good week for powerlifters from Weyburn at the Canadian Powerlifting Union National Championships in Ottawa. There were six competitors from Weyburn participating, and they combined for seven medals, and four national records, and one provincial record.

Marnel Spencer set a new national mark in the squat for her category at 10kg. She also benched 65kg and deadlifted 112.5kg to claim first place.

Participating in two separate categories, Brianna Swyryda came back to Weyburn with two medals, a silver medal and a gold medal. The silver medal came in the Classic category. In the equipped category claimed gold. En route, she set new national records in the squat (132.5kg) and bench (85kg), while also deadlifting 130kg.

Natalie Hastings also came home with a gold medal. She set a new provincial record with a squat of 106kg. She benched 60kg and deadlifted 107.5kg as well.

Competing in the Classic and Equipped category, Mikayla Lohse came back to Weyburn with a gold medal. She finished fifth in the Classic category, but then came roaring back in the Equipped with the gold. She squatted 157.5kg, benched 82.5kg and set a new national record for the deadlift at 171kg.

Participating in the Open category, Charlene Cossar took the gold medal with a squat of 180kg, a bench press of 12.5kg and a deadlift of 190kg.

The team’s coach, Ryan Fowler, was in the Bench Only competition. He took the gold with a bench of 250kg.

The results earned spots on the national team for Swyryda, Hastings and Lohse. They will be participating in the Junior World Championships in Regina in late August.
