It was a decision many were expecting to be made but were hoping it would happen.

The Western Canadian Baseball League, in a release posted to social media late Wednesday night, announced they would be cancelling the 2020 season. The decision was the result of a unanimous vote by the league’s Board of Governors.

The health and safety needs of everyone involved in the league were named as the number one concern for the teams in the league.

A number of options were explored, including pushing back the start of the season to July 4th or playing with only Canadian players. Provincial government guidelines in Saskatchewan and Alberta on the size of group gatherings also played a factor in the decision to cancel the season. While options such as limiting attendance were also considered, the fact the franchises would not be able to adjust to the economic impact of the decision in a gate revenue-driven league made it impossible.

The league thanked the players who had committed to playing in the WCBL this summer. The fans and communities were also thanked for their support during the COVID-19 pandemic,
