The second leg of the 84th Annual McLeod Series between the Weyburn Comprehensive Eagles and the Estevan Comprehensive Elecs senior basketball teams could not have asked for a better finale.

After the first two games in Weyburn, the Elecs had a slim three-point lead coming into games three and four Wednesday night in Estevan. The Eagles would need to be firing on all cylinders in both games to make up the difference and pull ahead.

The girls’ game started off the festivities in Estevan Wednesday night, after they closed out the night with a barnburner in the first leg.

Estevan came out firing on all cylinders, shooting everything up in the air that they could and pulled ahead to a seven-point lead early in the second quarter. From there, the Eagles would start to fire back, particularly thanks to the quick three-point shots coming from Hailey Neiszner whenever the Eagles would throw in the inbound. At the halfway point, the Eagles had a slim 29-28 game, a tighter game compared to the previous week.

Estevan would make an initial push in the first half of the third quarter, pulling ahead by a few points thanks to a three-point shooter of their own in Bethany Montebon, but the constant pressure coming the other way and a little bit of foul trouble would ultimately cost the Elecs. The Eagles would take the lead by five with two seconds left on the clock before Nieszner would send up a buzzer beater three that landed, giving the Eagles an eight-point lead in the game, and a five-point lead in the series.

In the senior boys game, the Elecs jumped out to an early lead and were leading 25-16 after the first quarter. They would hold the lead through much of the first half, but the Eagles rallied and closed the game to 47-42 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the Eagles rallied back, and the teams exchanged the lead with Weyburn taking a one-point edge into the final quarter.

In the fourth, Blake Anderson would lead the way with 11 points, while Connor Guenther added six more of his own. The points would help the Eagles pull away in the final minute of the game.

Estevan attempted to pull even but would have trouble getting any shots to go, and the Eagles won the game 87-85.

The series ended 288-281 for the Eagles, giving them their second McLeod Series title in a row.
