Hockey players from Weyburn continue to find success once they graduate out of the minor ranks, and move on to Midget AAA, junior, and even the pros.

Ethan Ernst, who joined the Kelowna Rockets as a 16-year-old, had a game he won’t soon forget Saturday against the Victoria Royals. Ernst scored his first goal in the WHL. The insurance marker in the 5-1 win for Kelowna came in the third period.

Ernst now has four points on the season.

A number of players who are either from Weyburn or played minor hockey in Weyburn are toiling in the Midget AAA ranks this season. Two of them found themselves on opposite sides of the ice Sunday.

Drew Englot, who is originally from Candiac but played with the Bantam AA Wings, scored twice, including the game-winner in overtime, as the Notre Dame Hounds beat the Regina Pat Canadians. Englot now has five points in six games this season.

On the other side of the ice was Braden Birnie, who played with Englot as a Bantam Wing in the 2015-16 season. Birnie scored twice for the Pat Canadians in the loss. He now has four goals and four assists in eight games.

Also making their mark in Midget AAA on the weekend was Shayde Peterson. The former Weyburn Bantam AA Wing had a pair of assists for the Battlefords Stars as they fell 4-3 to the Moose Jaw Generals. Also picking up a point in the game was Steven Kesselring, who had an assist for the Generals.

A number of Weyburn players are also skating in the PJHL.

Andrew Hulbert had a goal and an assist with the Delisle Chiefs Friday night in a 5-2 win over Carrot River. Hulbert now has eight points this season with the Chiefs.

Weyburn’s Austin Neiszner plays with the Assiniboia Southern Rebels, and he picked up an assist in the Rebels 7-4 win over the Saskatoon Royals yesterday afternoon.
