Weyburn Paralympian Progress in PyeongChang

The PyeongChang Paralympics wrap up on Sunday after nine days of 80 events in six sports. Weyburn's Curt Minard was selected to represent Canada in Snowboard Cross and Bank Slalom. The first SBX event happened at the Sochi 2014 games and this is the first time Bank Slalom has debuted at the winter games.

"I started out the other day with no expectations but just to go out there and have some fun to let the skill base take over and just be mentally strong. I went out there and laid down two really good qualifying runs."

Minard came two seconds behind the leader and finished in fourth place and a place in the heats. In the first heat, Minard won against fellow Canadian, Andrew Genge. The second heat was the quarterfinal matchup between Minard and Manuel Pozzerle of Italy. Pozzerle started the race in first off the block. As Minard attempted to pass after the fastest part of the course, he stumbled and cartwheeled out of the race.

"That was the end of my podium dream, that was it I was eliminated in the quarters." He didn't get a medal but still portrays optimism and gratitude for the season he has had and the time spent at the Paralympic games so far.

"I had a really successful year finishing 2nd overall in SBX and have a 6th place at my first games I'm walking away pretty content."

Minard said he has enjoyed seeing athletes from around the world having coffee together.

"It's pretty amazing to be on the world stage like this."

Minard's Paralympics is not over yet as he competes in Bank Slalom on Friday. He said SBX has always been his favorite of the two but he did place 7th in the world cup season in Bank Slalom and has improved over the year.

"I've gained a lot of headway in seconds."

There are three runs in the Bank Slalom with the top three in the third run making the podium.
