The Weyburn Volleyball club sent 11 girls to Las Vegas this past weekend to take part in the Southern California Volleyball Association Las Vegas Classic.

"One of the biggest tournaments in the US. This year there were about 750 teams at it within a couple of divisions," explained Luke Guest, Head Coach, Weyburn 16U Rush.

The Rush went 3-5 in the tournament.

"Honestly that's pretty close to where I thought we would be," said Guest who went on to explain how the competition in the US is stronger due to the size of the population.

In some of the big cities, they had as many as 1000 children try out for one team.

Guest says he is proud that they were able to take all 11 girls that tried out for the team, to Vegas and for getting the three wins.

"The whole tournament was just a fantastic opportunity for these girls as well as a great experience for parents to see their kids playing in such a high-level tournament."

Koby Bryant, Retired Basketball Player who played his whole career with the LA Lakers had a daughter playing in the tournament in a team of the same age as the Weyburn Rush.

"He was there all weekend," said Guest. "We could only get so close to taking pictures because his security guards were all around him but he stole the show for a while there's no question about that."

Volleyball is growing in popularity in Weyburn.

Guest says they have dedicated coaches and the team have eight tournaments left to play with two busy months in March and April.
