It took an overtime period, and 36 seconds of a second one, for things to be settled Wednesday night between the Yellow Grass Wheat Kings and the Carnduff Red Devils. In the end, though, it was the Wheat Kings coming out on top, as Cory Koski scored the game winner to complete the hat trick. The win completes the sweep for Yellow Grass, who advance to the semi-finals after taking the best-of-five quarterfinal in three straight.

The game was back and forth all night, as the Wheat Kings opened the scoring late in the opening period. Mike Onstad scored the first of his three goals on the night, with the assists going to Jesse Watson and Jeff Reimer. Carnduff replied quickly afterwards, as Matt Audette got the puck past Wheat Kings netminder Tanner Erickson with 2:21 on the clock. Yellow Grass would restore their lead just over a minute later, after Koski scored his first of the night, set up by Brenden Vertefeuille.

To start off the second period, the Red Devils came out firing. Audette scored his second of three on the night just 56 seconds into the middle frame, with Blake McMillen getting credit for the assist. Trevor Geiger then began his hat trick two minute slater, with Audette and McMillen getting the assists. Audette would complete the hat trick 26 seconds later, with Devon Carriere and McMillen helping out.

Now trailing by two goals, Yellow Grass pulled back to within on when Onstad scored his second of the game, as Dylan Frey and Matt Dreis helped out with the assists. The two goal margin would be restored before the end of the period, though, as Shawn Gallant beat Erickson, with Barrett Dumaine getting the assist.

The Wheat Kings, who spent most of the second on their heels, responded after the intermission in the third. Just 17 seconds in, Koski scored his second of the night, with Vertefeuille and Zach Watson picking up the assists. Yellow Grass would then tie things up on a goal from Vertefeuille, who was set up by Kyle Mryglod. Just second later, the Wheat Kings would take the lead, as Onstad finished off his hat trick, making it 6-5. Just after the halfway marker of the period, Vertefeuille would score again, with the assist going to Koski.

The two goal lead wouldn’t be enough, though, as seconds later Geiger notched his second, set up by Carriere and Audette. With just over six minutes left, the Red Devils would tie the game back up as Geiger finished off his hat trick, assisted by Carriere and Audette.

The two teams went to overtime, where they played a ten minute period. Nothing was solved, the ice was flooded, and the teams came back out for a full 20 minute overtime period. They wouldn’t need it, though. Just 36 seconds into the second extra frame, Koski finished off the hat trick, with Vertefeuille picking up his fifth point of the game on the assist.

The Wheat Kings now advance to the Big Six semifinals, where they will most likely face the Bienfait Coalers. The Coalers are currently leading the Oxbow Huskies 2-0 in that best-of-5 quarterfinal series. Bienfait will be looking to complete the sweep on Friday night.
