The Yellow Grass Wheat Kings opened their playoffs with a win over the Carnduff Red Devils, as the Big Six Hockey League playoffs continued Thursday night. The Wheat Kings won 5-2, taking a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five quarterfinal series.

Yellow Grass entered the locker room after the opening 20 minutes with a 2-0 lead, after Troy Miller and Mike Onstad scored in the dying moments of the frame. Brendon Vertefeuille assisted on the Miller goal, while Onstad’s was unassisted. The Wheat Kings would continue with two more goals in quick succession in the second period.

Devon Johnson scored with 12 minutes left on the clock, set up by Matt Dreis and Dylan Frey. Just 29 seconds later, Dreis added an unassisted marker of his own, giving the Wheat Kings a 4-0 lead.

The Red Devils would reply just past the halfway mark of the second, when Kody martin scored, assisted by Shawn Gallant and Matt Audette. A second goal from Carnduff came in the third, with Audette getting the puck past Tanner Erickson. Landon Senchuk and Devon Carriere assisted on the goal.

Yellow Grass would score one more just moments later, as Dustin Chartrand scored an insurance marker.

The two teams will be back in action for game two of their series on Sunday. The game will be played in Carnduff. The Red Devils will have a game Saturday night as the SHA senior playoffs continue. Carnduff hosts Grenfell for game two of that best of three series.

Other Big Six game sin the coming days include the Midale Mustangs travelling to Wawota to take on the Flyers for game one of their Big Six quarterfinal. The Bienfait Flyers head to Milestone for game two of their SHA playoff series. Bienfait leads the series 1-0. The Carlyle Cougars play host to Ochapowace for game one of their SHA series.

Saturday, three SHA playoff games for the Big Six, including the Carnduff-Grenfell game. Wawota and Theodore take the ice, with Theodore leading the series 1-0. Ochapowace and Carlyle play game two of their series.
