The home win was the second game between the two this year, in a rematch of the league finals from last season.

The Flyers came out firing on all cylinders in the first period, as they jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead. It started with a goal from Dillon Frater and was followed up with quick markers from Kent Sauter and Warren Hunter. The Wheat Kings weren’t going to go down quietly, though.

The lone goal in the second period came off the stick of Corey Koski. Assists on the goal went to Dylan Frey and Devin Cobbold. The Wheat Kings kept up the pressure and were rewarded with another goal early in the third, as Zack Watson found the back of the net, with Justin Richter picking up his first of two assists on the night.

Wawota fired back, scored twice within twenty seconds. Linden Poirier scored with 12:13 left on the clock, and the next goal came off the stick of Kent Sauter just moments later.

The 5-2 deficit wasn’t something the Wheat Kings were concerned, about, though. They came roaring back with three more goals in just over four minutes. It started with Brendon Vertefeuille scoring, with Richter getting the assist. Shortly after the goal, Koski scored his second of the game, and fifth in two nights. Kyle Mryglod completed the rally for the Wheat Kings, scored with just over three minutes left, assisted by Cobbold.

The Mryglod goal sent the game to overtime, where Koski found himself scoring his third of the game, recording his second hat trick in as many games. The win elevated the Wheat Kings to a record of 5-3, and they are currently second in the league. The loss drops Wawota to 3-0-2, however, the Flyers still remain undefeated in regulation this season.

The next game for the Wheat Kings is Thursday. They host the Arcola Combines. Puck drops on the game at 8:15 p.m.
