What has been a phenomenal season for Weyburn Beavers’ outfielder Corey Wheaton was given a boost Wednesday morning. The Scottsdale, Arizona native was named the WMBL’s league MVP.

Wheaton, in his first season with the Beavers, finished the regular season with an average of .372, second best in the league. He also tied for the league lead in stolen bases with 30, also setting a new franchise record in the process.

Wheaton also contributed heavily at the plate, with 11 doubles, three home runs, and 15 RBI.

Adding to the honours for Wheaton was the selection as a first-team all-star, one of six Beavers to receive All-Star team honours.

Also named a first-team all-star was pitcher Ryan Johnson. In his final year with the Beavers, Johnson had 57 strikeouts, while going 3-1 in six starts on the season. Johnson also posted a 2.80 ERA.

There were four second-team all-star selections from the Beavers.

Corey Harrell, whose 12 home runs set a new franchise high, was named the designated hitter. Harrell, also in his final season with the Beavers, finished the year with a .291 batting average, and 42 RBI.

Wade Weinberger was selected as an outfielder for the second-team. He was second on the team with eight home runs and added 27 RBI while batting .361.

Felix Correa, who joined the team partway through the season, caught the attention of the league as he posted a batting average of .336 en route to being named the second-team shortstop. The Canovanas, Puerto Rico native also chipped in 16 stolen bases and 13 RBI.

Rounding out the all-star selections for the Beavers was closer Eric Evans. He finished second in the league with 10 saves, further solidifying his team record for career saves. Evans is playing his final season in the WMBL.
