So far in 2019 we've seen two very different versions of the Weyburn Red Wings — the one that went 4–0 to start the new year and showed commitment and resiliency, and now this version which has lost three straight by wide margins.

A 6–3 loss at the hands of the Estevan Bruins on Saturday night made it a weekend sweep for the Bruins over their Highway 39 rivals from Weyburn. Even with key contributors Jayden Davis, Austin King-Cunningham, Bryce Platt and Tristyn DeRoose all sitting out with suspensions for Estevan, the Wings were unable to generate consistent offensive shifts and once again were let down by their powerplay.

A couple of wacky bounces and a slow start had the Wings down 3–0 after just 20 minutes. Cody Levesque was peppered with 16 shots in the first and 50 in total on the night.

Rhett Frey had the lone goal in the middle frame to give the Wings some life and cut the lead to 3–1. Newcomer Tyler Leibl picked up the primary assist on the goal and made a nice move down low to work the puck to Frey in front. You can see Leibl given the rookie treatment below.

The Bruins came out flying to start the third and made sure it wasn't going to be tight down the stretch. Just 5:28 into the final period they led 5–1. Eric Soar would add a goal late, his fifth in the last six games and third of the weekend.

Connor Pyne also scored for the Wings for his first goal in 86 days in just his second game back after a two-month absence. It was too little too late for the red and white as they fell to their rivals for the fourth time in five meetings this season.

With Melville back in action on Sunday, the Wings still currently sit one point back for the final playoff spot and have three big games coming up next week against tough opponents. They'll be in Wilcox to face the Hounds on Tuesday night, before Nipawin and Melfort visit Crescent Point Place next weekend.
