After a number of weeks of being extra busy, retailers in Weyburn may finally be enjoying a little downtime.

“From the amount of sheer traffic that we saw downtown, we think that Weyburn businesses did pretty darn good this year,” said Twila Walkeden, Executive Director with the Weyburn Chamber of Commerce.

Weyburn retailers were going for a month straight, with Christmas shopping taking place between Black Friday well into Boxing week.

“It’s been a bit of a season for them. You have to know that they start [on] Black Friday, in all their promotions and their sales and their marketing, so there has been a lot going on and I’m sure they’re pleased with the way Christmas has turned out this year, in terms of retail activity,” she said.

Holiday gift shopping may be wrapped up for another season for retailers, but those running an online business might be making up for lost time, as the postal strike may have affected local online business sales.

“I think we did see a bit of an impact with the postal strike,”she said. “A lot of people didn’t do the online shopping, potentially, that they might have, and that’s due to the uncertainty of actually getting those parcels by the mail in time for Christmas.”

Walkeden said it’s a wise business practice for retailers to also have an online iron in the fire.

“We really see a lot of our retailers embracing marketing their products online, and we really applaud that, because, if you’re going to survive in this marketplace, you really have to find new and intuitive ways to really reach your customer and reach the whole world with your product,” said Walkeden.

While it’s likely going to be a slower month for retailers, there is no limit for online sales, especially if they deal in New Year’s resolutions.
