Souris-Moose Mountain MP Dr. Robert Kitchen had a busy year participating in an initiative to keep him up and moving. He took part in ParticipACTION 150, which was a list of 150 sports and activities which Canadians were challenged to take part in during 2017.

"I accomplished 83 of those 150. The plan is in the next year to try and get the other 67," explained Kitchen, who said the challenge took longer than expected.

Kitchen took part in activities such as soccer, rugby, and surfing.

"How do you surf when you're from the prairies? That one ParticipACTION brought a surfing simulator to Ottawa and so I got a chance to get on that one."

"I think my favourite ones, the ones I had the most fun with, were when I was doing things with constituents."

Kitchen was invited by constituents to take part in activities in different communities. He took part in pickleball in Moosomin, dodgeball in Estevan and planned to try kayaking in Weyburn but was unable to get the date worked out. He said he will try again this year.

One of the more challenging activities on the list, according to Kitchen, is Quidditch.

"I understand there are Quidditch clubs in Regina, at the university. I am trying to figure out how I can coordinate with that to get up there."

Kitchen said he had to research Quidditch, the sport created by Harry Potter series author, J.K. Rowling.

"I'm not a Harry Potter person so I have never seen the movies or read the books so it will be quite interesting to see when we get that accomplished."

"As long as I don't wrap that broomstick around my neck I will be okay," quipped Dr Kitchen.

The purpose for ParticipACTION is to encourage Canadians to be more active and to exercise doing things they enjoy.

"One of my big goals is to get people involved, getting people out, getting people active."

Kitchen said being active in these events helps Canadians socially and with physical health.

"It helps us with our young people developing leadership skills in participating in these events."

Kitchen added Parliamentarians do a lot of meetings, a lot of sitting and a lot of them are not getting out.

"If we are going to ask people to do certain things we need to lead by example."

The full list of activities is available in Dr. Kitchen's Weyburn constituency office.
