The Weyburn branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association is moving forward for another year with a new president.

During the annual general meeting Wednesday night they discussed budget changes, highlighted individuals for their help during the past year, and voted in Arun Masand as the new board president.

"Mental wellness and the awareness of it has always been close to my heart," said Masand. "This is an honor, and I'm really looking forward to making a difference in the community."

The CMHA brought in $252,538 during the 2016/17 fiscal year and spent $2,999 more than that in the year.

11 of the 16 board members took time out of their busy schedules to attend the meeting last night.

"I truly believe that the profile of mental health has been raised within our community," said Tasha Collins, CMHA Program Director. "It seems to be gaining some ground and recognition."

Some of the non-profit community involvements this past year included volunteering at the United Way Communithon, participating in the "adopt a planter" program through the City of Weyburn, helping the local Salvation Army with refuse hauling, partnering with Blue Earth, an annual trade show, making dog toys for a Humane Society Valentine's Day fundraiser, youth theatre shows during mental health week, a semi-colon tattoo event (with 55 tattoos completed), manicures for the community, the Mayor's Luncheon and a meet and greet with Constable Jeffrey Bartsh. They worked with other organizations as well including the Weyburn and Area Supportive Employment Services Inc. where they hosted and provided meals for Community Connections Meetings.

The CMHA youth program includes youth between the ages of nine and 16. They provide a place for youth to meet and participate in various activities. This program allows youth to grow, mature, become leaders and explore their creative side. Their objectives for the youth programing are to encourage self-esteem, confidence, inclusion and leadership while developing new skills.

Every person will deal with mental health at some point in their life.
