The cancellation of the Energy East pipeline project by TransCanada continues to make waves across Canada.

The decision is being met with anger by many in western Canada, with many seeing flaws in the regulatory process as the reason TransCanada did make the decision. One of those who wasn’t shocked by the decision, but is disappointed none the less is Weyburn-Big Muddy MLA, Dustin Duncan.

Duncan, who’s riding could have potentially seen a boon as a result of employment connected to the pipeline, said the decision to change the regulatory process to include examining the impact of downstream emissions as a result of the pipeline was akin to moving the goalposts. The ruling had previously led to TransCanada requesting a 30-day suspension of the regulatory process.

“It’s costing this country a great deal in terms of jobs, in terms of the GDP,” Duncan told Discover Weyburn. “This is a project that was going to add $50 billion to the GDP of this country, and create 14,000 jobs on a pipeline that is two thirds (of the way complete).”
