Weyburn residents awoke to a new sound on the radio today. The station formerly known as K106, has been relaunched as BIG106. Along with a new name, the station will be operating under an entirely new format.

K106 offered a classic rock station to Weyburn and area for the past five years. BIG106, however, will offer more than just rock hits. Station Manager Cam Birnie is excited for the new look and feel of 106.7 FM.

"It's going to be a very exciting and fun change to the Weyburn radio landscape, effective today," Birnie explained. "It's been five years —  K106 was on the air for five years with the rock format. Really this is about providing a spark and some energy for the community and change can be really good. We just feel like this is going to be a real popular and exciting feature for the community of Weyburn and all of southeast Saskatchewan."

Like changing a menu or rearranging some furniture, a refresh doesn't always have to be a bad thing. The new playlist will feature unforgettable songs spanning decades from the 70s, 80s and 90s.

Birnie believes listeners are going to love a radio station with nothing but the biggest hits.

"It's going to feature the biggest songs, from the biggest artists from the last 30 to 40 years. So, if you can imagine a radio station where the audience will know the words to almost every song, that's the type of radio station we're going to be having with BIG106."

Dara Currie and Deron Fahlman will host the morning and afternoon shows, respectively. Currie has spent the past three and a half years as the morning show host on K106, but is looking forward to a new chapter in the station's history.

"It's really exciting stuff," she said. "It's taking what we were to the next level and I think it's going to just be a really great change and an amazing addition to Weyburn."
