A combination of cats and coffee culminated in a successful fundraiser for the Weyburn Humane Society this weekend. They raised $665 in donations and raffle ticket sales for the animal shelter this weekend.

Over 80 people attended the two-hour event at Microtel. Many were surprised to discover this was not the Humane Society's first cat cafe event.

"We had our first one probably about a year and a half ago but we haven't had one for a while so we thought we'd revisit the event again and we promoted it a lot better this time around," explained board member and organizer Lisa Webb.

She said they tripled their donations at this event over the last cat cafe. Not only did guests of the cat cafe give donations but they bought raffle tickets as well for some cat-inspired coffee cups and a cat-shaped cake. The cake was made and donated by Wes and Terry Lonoway in memory of their 21-year-old Himalayan cat named 'Meatball'. The raffle winners were Christina Zachrisson and Michelle Stadler.

Lisa Webb, Kelly Linnell, Lana Rutledge, and Randy Bakaluk showed off the cake up for auction.

A local business helped support the cause by donating the space and beverages.

"We approached Microtel hotel and they are a pet-friendly hotel so they said we could use one of their meeting rooms and they've been great," said Webb.

The cat cafe featured five friendly felines from the animal shelter and attendees were encouraged to play with the kitties while sipping coffee, tea and juice. Many children also took part in drawing and colouring some cat art with supplies that were provided.

At least one adoption may have come out of the interaction at the cat cafe on Sunday.

Gabriella Georgacacos and Ryker Foster took turns petting one of the cats.
