With the increased amount of vehicles travelling the highways on May long weekend every year, its no wonder there is an increase in collisions, as well as drivers being arrested for drinking and driving or fined for speeding.

In 2016 during the May long weekend, 255 collisions resulted in 82 people injured and two deaths.

"Every long weekend," explained SGI's Tyler McMurchy, "we like to remind people that more people will be hitting the road, either heading to the lake or visiting family or friends, and because those highways are busier it does increase your chance of being involved in a collision."

"Obviously long weekends are great, nobody can dispute this, but we want people to make sure that they drive sober and drug-free, they avoid distractions, they drive at an appropriate speed and they buckle up," said McMurchy.

SGI is focusing their Traffic Safety Spotlight on impaired driving for the month of May. Law enforcement is paying extra attention to catch those driving while impaired. Weyburn police held a two-day blitz on area highways to kick off the weekend on Friday. That resulted in over 30 tickets, over 20 warnings, several vehicle inspections and two criminal code charges.
