Today marks Canada’s Agriculture Day, which was started to help showcase the agriculture industry, as well as help educate consumers on the connection between what they see on their fork, and the people who produce it.

The Weyburn Regional Officer of the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture marked the day by holding a come and go coffee. The event is designed to allow people to come in and ask questions of the staff, and learn more about the industry.

Sherri Roberts is the regional crops extension specialist in the Weyburn office. She sais the staff here in the Weyburn office cover a wide variety of areas.

“We people here in the Ministry of Ag regional offices, we’re the boots on the ground, and we try to put out effective information to the consumer on agriculture and to help the producer in any way that we can in the fields of crops, forages, economics, and programs,” explained Roberts.

For Roberts, she thinks Agriculture Day (or #CdnAgDay, as it is known on social media) is a good way for people to learn more about the food they eat, and where it comes from. She explained many people may not know all the details involved in getting food from the farm to the fork.

“The big problem that I see, and what’s happening today, is that more and more people are getting farther and farther away from the farm,” Roberts pointed out. “As a result, a lot of ideas and information that they’re getting and believing might not be the whole truth.”

Roberts says those who want to know more about agriculture, or who want to ask some questions about the industry, are welcome to come by their office Weyburn to do so.
