When a deep freeze strikes, like the one we experienced last week, chances are you will hear of water main breaks, equipment breaking down, and a number of other headaches for city crews.

”We never had any water main breaks through the cold spell which you can sometimes expect when the frost starts pounding in the ground like that,” explained Claude Morin, Superintendent of Public Works and Parks with the City of Weyburn.

While the mains themselves didn’t have any problems, there were some reports from residents around the community of some issues which popped up. Morin explained many of the reports stem from a few common issues.

“The frost has gotten deep enough down that the service connection has frozen, that’s the line coming into the house, or other times it’s something in the house,” Morin stated. He pointed out pipes in a cold part of a basement can sometimes freeze up, which can cause a number of problems in the house.

The cold did make things difficult as crews continued snow removal operations throughout the city. The temperature made it tough for some of the hydraulic systems to work as they should, but crews kept at it throughout the frigid conditions.

There are plans for a city-wide snow removal operation to start this week, including the residential areas, as long as the weather is permitting.
