The Weyburn movie theatre has been closed permanently since Friday, last week. The reactions to the closure have been shared by many on social media and in conversations around the city.

City Councillors are also disappointed by the closure.

"Like everybody else, we are disappointed too, hate to lose anything and particularly something that can draw folks from all over, disappointing news," answered Jeff Richards, Weyburn City Councillor, when asked what his reaction to the theatre closing.

"Ultimately we'd love to find a situation where the private sector can come up with a solution for us," said Richards and suggested either an independently owned theatre or a cooperative or something to that effect as possibilities.

"We don't want to be a city without a movie theatre."

Richards is not yet aware if anyone has come forward to City Council with a plan but would love to hear if anyone has ideas how they would make something happen.

"If somebody has got some ideas about how they might be able to make something happen I would suggest get a good strong business plan together and come into city hall and have a conversation with the folks up there and see if we can get this thing going again."

The question has been asked why City Council have not made Landmark Cinemas keep the theatre and fix it up or taken on the ownership of the theatre.

Richards explained that the city cannot get involved in that way. They distribute business licenses but do not take part in the day-to-day running of businesses.

"As a City council we don't get involved in private industry, we don't get involved in a business. Unfortunately when businesses open and close its good news and bad news. All we try to do as the council is creating an environment where businesses can flourish."

"Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't."

Landmark decided to close the theatre because of the investment needed to get the building up to a safe standard. The flooring, heating system, cooling system and roof need renovating.

Bill Walker, CEO, Landmark Cinemas said last week, they are willing to help any local entrepreneur interested in investing in getting a Movie theatre started again in Weyburn.
