The snow Weyburn received over the weekend may not have amounted to much in terms of official snowfall (the Environment Canada on-ground sensor reported less than a centimetre), but the winds helped it to build up on the streets in and around the community. This included ankle and knee deep drifts in a number of areas.

With this being the first significant snowfall of the winter, city crews from Weyburn are out and about working to remove the snow.

Claude Morin is the superintendent of public works and parks in the city.

“Starting at midnight we will be doing a downtown clearing operation, and that will proceed through the night and into the morning hours,” Morin explained. “As always, we would ask motorists to avoid our work areas where possible, for their safety as well as the safety of our staff.”

The snow removal operations started with work on primary and secondary routes around the city on the weekend, and operations will continue.

Crews aren’t expecting to start work in residential areas, as for the most part, they fared well. Morin said some of the trouble spots will be addressed as needed.

Morin is also reminding residents of Weyburn to not push snow onto the street.

“It’s obviously tough for us to police that but it certainly adds to the problem, particularly if they are pushing it onto a street that’s already been graded.”
