Every year, some Weyburn residents exercise their green thumbs with a plot in the community garden.

Located on South Hill, behind the Tommy Douglas Centre, the 48 plots are a hot commodity. Linda Prokott is the Parks Coordinator for the City of Weyburn and oversees the program.

“Every year we’ve had a new waiting list of people who are looking to get a plot at the community garden, and we’ve kept adding new beds,” Prokott explained. There is already a waiting list in place for next year.

The gardens, which measure 4’x12’, allow for many different fruits and vegetables to be grown, with the city asking gardeners to be considerate of space. The types of crops range from carrots to beets, to peas. Prokott, who has one of the plots herself, says they are all looking to be in good shape, despite the lack of rain in the city.

The lush gardens are due to the fact the city irrigates the plots twice a week. As well, residents can supplement with their own watering at any time.

If anyone would like to be added to the waiting list for a new plot, they can contact the department of public works and park at (306) 848-3290.
