Family, friends, co-workers and other community members filled the Cugnet Centre yesterday for a celebration of life for Kailynn Bursic-Panchuk. The 17-year-old died tragically after a train collided with her car last month.

Several friends and family members spoke at the event, sharing happy memories of the young woman, who would have crossed the Cugnet Centre stage this school year to graduate from the Weyburn Comprehensive School.

One of Kailynn's teachers, Kyla Moffat, was an organizer and speaker at the memorial. She shared how kind and generous Kailynn was to everyone around her.

"After the horrific Humboldt bus crash in April, Kailynn told her family she wanted to be an organ donor. Her final act of kindness and compassion for others was respected by her family and they carried out her selfless wishes. We can find a measure of relief and peace in this, knowing that her gift of organ donation has given others a chance to live," Moffat shared with the crowd.

Kailynn's organ donations saved the lives of three people.

It wasn't just a somber affair. Some friends from Fillmore Central School with whom Kailynn went to elementary school had the crowd laughing as they shared stories about their friend. One friend and Weyburn Comp classmate even wrote, sung and recorded a song to be played at the celebration of life. Brayden King's song was played for those in attendance. His absence was due to a Rotary trip to Belgium.

The song can be heard below.

A scholarship fund has been set up in Kailynn's memory at the Weyburn branch of the CIBC.
