Weyburn woke up to rain Wednesday morning, as more than five millimetres fell on the city overnight. It is the beginning of a stretch of days which are expected to be cool and wet with the start of autumn fast approaching.

Natalie Hasell is with Environment and Climate Change Canada. She explained the weather is being caused by a Colorado low passing through southeast Saskatchewan. Unlike most Colorado lows we experience, though, this one shouldn’t bring any snow with it.

“Temperatures remaining above zero, at least that’s what we have in the forecast,” Hasell explained. “Even in the night time period, the coldest we have is Saturday night at a low of 2°.”

The rain is expected to linger for a few days, starting to fall on Thursday. Upwards o f15 millimetres are expected then, with the forecast calling for more periods of rain right through until Monday of next week.

“An area of low pressure just to the south of you, and actually you have a ridge to the north of you, so you’re just sandwiched in right there where the precipitation happens to be at the moment,” Hasell said, explaining why the system is expected to linger over the region.

With many producers in the field working to wrap up harvest in southeast Saskatchewan, the rain, while needed, may be coming at an inopportune time. Ultimately, though, Hasell said it is needed in the region after an extremely dry summer.

“If you don’t have rain at this time of year to get into the soil before things freeze up, it could be a very difficult start to the next agricultural cycle.”
