Parents or guardians of children or young adults experiencing mental health challenges can attend a monthly Support Network meeting to share and discuss tools for coping.

"This support network was formed by parents or guardians seeking support for one another," explained Marion Scott. "They have children suffering various levels of anxiety and / or depression. This includes many forms of mental health. Low self-esteem, mood swings, irritability, managing stress and stressors."

Scott noted how they support one another.

"The group meets to discuss and gain tools to assist themselves and their youth, sharing and discussing tools for coping and strengthening ones' abilities and improving our wellness," she said. "This sharing comes in the form of past experiences, of ways that helped and those that haven't helped. Through discussion we can pool tools, strategies that offer support, and strengthen our families' needs."

She said they hope to sometimes welcome speakers to their meetings, who'll share their experiences of coping and living with their child's mental health.

"While we meet to support one another, some evenings we may do crafts," Scott added.

"Having a place to meet, share, and discuss, is a support for one another that can't be measured," she commented. "Tools we hope to gain and practice are building self-esteem, gaining confidence, managing and coping with stress and stressors, dealing with mood swings and irritability."

The Support Network meets at 6:30 p.m, every second Tuesday, at the CanAlta Hotel. The next meeting takes place this Tuesday night.

The program is being offered through the Weyburn branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association.
