It will be a very busy night for Weyburn City Council Monday, as they hold their only meeting of the month of June. The meeting originally scheduled for June 12th was canceled.

The meeting is set to start off with a delegation from CP Rail. The delegation will be presenting their case as to why Queen Street Crossing should be closed. They cite a study by Transport Canada that ranks it as the 65th most dangerous crossing in the country, and that the crossing itself is out of compliance with the regulations put forward by Transport Canada. An estimate by KGS Engineering is it will cost upwards of $1.3 million dollars to bring the crossing up to code.

Council has spoken in the past of their opposition to closing the crossing, opting to find ways to bring it into compliance.

In addition to the delegation, there will be a number of committee reports presented. Scheduled to make the presentations are the Police Commission, the Parks Board, the Airport Board, and others.

One other report which will be tabled was compiled by Councillor Dick Michel and Pat Maloney on the state of city sidewalks. Out of the 2491 observations made, there was less than 25 percent of the recorded instances where the sidewalk was in acceptable or good condition.

A request for proposal for the monitoring and sampling contracts for groundwater wells near the landfill will also be discussed. The city is required by provincial law to monitor the groundwater wells within the vicinity of the landfill to check for contaminants.

The meeting will be held at 6:00 p.m. Monday night, in the council chambers at City Hall.
