Weyburn's City Council met last night for the second regular meeting of 2018.

At last council meeting, the 2018 Budget had been tabled to give city councillors time to go through the budget in more detail and make sure they had all the information needed to vote on it.

Last night, after a brief discussion, the budget was passed with some changes to the previously proposed version.

"The council was able to come together, make some adjustments based on priorities and have come up with a 2.54% on the levy which they will be dealing with in a subsequent council meeting," explained City Manager Roy Hardy.

The final cuts to the budget save the city $135,000. The previous draft budget had proposed a levy of 4.79%.

"Staff have their program going forward in terms of what is to be accomplished within 2018."

Hardy said it was a rough budget process due to provincial government cuts. The provincial government cut around $1.6 million to Weyburn last year.

The first item to be cut was the reserve. Instead of $100,000 being put into reserves, Council decided to put $50,000 in to reserves and $50,000 into operating.

The second and third items cut were capital projects.

The first capital project was software used for urban forestry planning which was cut in order to save $15,000. The city staff can use current software already being used.

The second capital project cut was new flooring for a storage area in the Public Works building.

This cut has saved the Weyburn $70,000. A new public works building is being planned for, within the next two years.
