It can be a challenge to keep your car clean in the winter months but keeping one part clean is the law.

Police Chief Marlo Pritchard shared one such law under the traffic safety act.

"There is an offence to have obstructed license plates, ones that can't be read by speed cameras or red light cameras," explained Pritchard. "They need to be kept clean of debris. You can't cover them with reflective material."

The fine is $150 but Pritchard said officers will likely issue a warning to drivers with a dirty license plate if they are not intentionally covering them in an attempt to thwart license plate readers.

"Whereas other ones where you put the reflectors on it, which is designed to defeat a red light camera or a speed camera, you're probably going to get a ticket for $150."
