The rails in Weyburn have been quieter lately and that may have gone unnoticed but it is hard to miss the work crews and bright yellow equipment on the Canadian Pacific rails around Weyburn lately.

Yesterday they were right along Highway 39 and caused traffic on its way in and out of Weyburn to slow down briefly. Salem Woodrow, Spokesperson for CP, said the public has nothing to worry about.

"CP crews are completely scheduled maintenance in the Weyburn area. They'll be working on it all week," she said. Woodrow added most of the work will be done at night and shouldn't interfere with traffic.

The crews have already been in the Weyburn area for a few weeks now and have not caused disruptions. CP said the track is generally a very quiet place. According to the CP website, the company does its best to be a reasonable neighbour, but communities near railways must expect to see and hear a certain amount of activity.

When trains pass, residents may hear the locomotives followed by the movement of freight cars and wheels making contact with the rails. When trains stop or start, residents will hear the sound of brakes being applied or air under pressure passing through brake pipes on each car. Those who live near tracks may also hear cars bumping together when slowing, or the slack being taken up when a train accelerates.
