The Weyburn native is taking part in Rescue on the Prairies, an annual fundraiser for the air ambulance service. Cugnet, along with five others, will be dropped off in a remote location where they will complete a number of challenges, and at the same time, use their cell phone to raise money to help reach their personal goals.

Cugnet had originally set a goal of $50,000. With the chance to do some fundraising and get a head start ahead of the day itself, he quickly surpassed the goal, and eventually had to change it to $100,000.

“We’re actually at about $92,000 right now, as of this moment,” Cugnet said. “With less than 24 hours to go, we’re almost there, so it’s great.”

While taking part in the challenge, Cugnet will be paired up with a member of STARS, who will assist him in the various tasks they are assigned, and also help with the fundraising. With such a big event on the horizon, Cugnet was asked if he was nervous.

“A little bit, a little bit, but we’ll just see how it goes. The response has been overwhelming, everyone has been wonderful. I appreciate it, everyone out there. Thank you,” Cugnet related.

Cugnet understands how important STARS can be for many in the southeast. When asked back in June about taking on this challenge, and why, he said it is the importance of having such a needed service in the province that motivated him.

“STARS is one of those things in Saskatchewan that sort of touches all of us, you know, and all families, whether it's a friend or relative,” Cugnet explained when sitting down with Discover Weyburn. “It’s unfortunate that people need the service, but we are so fortunate that we do have it.”

Those who want to help Cugnet reach his goal, so he doesn’t get left stranded in a field, you can make a donation on the Rescue on the Prairie website.
