With a cutting of the ribbon, Dominic Place officially opened Friday morning in Weyburn. Dominic Place is a 14-unit rental housing project designed to support residents with complex needs.

The project, spearheaded by Van Bee Holdings, is on the site of the old St. Dominic School, with the units built above what was the gymnasium of the school. The gymnasium is still intact, for use by the residents.

The project itself was a partnership between the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation, CMHC, the City of Weyburn, and Van Bee Holdings. Weyburn Mental Health also partnered with Van Bee on the project.

Dustin Duncan, MLA for Weyburn-Big Muddy, represented the provincial government at the ribbon cutting. He explained how the project helps meet the province’s strategies for working with mental health, as well as poverty reduction. He also talked about it's benefits to the city of Weyburn.

“This is a project that has been the dream of a number of people for a number of years now,” Duncan explained. One of those people is Mel Van Betuw. He is the president of Van Bee Holdings and spearheaded the project.

“Probably been about a three and half year process from the time I started, and this is the icing on the cake; the culmination of the whole project,” Van Betuw said after the ceremony. “I’m quite happy and relieved to have it finished, but I'm quite proud of it as well.”

There are six one-bedroom units in the project, along with four studio apartments. There are also four bachelor suites. There are a number of common rooms as part of the project as well.
