A rare event will be in the skies over Weyburn Sunday night.

A blood moon total lunar eclipse.

“Starting at 9:30 till about 10:30 or 10:40, the moon is going to get covered by the Earth’s shadow,” explained Karen Kennedy-Allin, a teacher-advisor with the Weyburn Comprehensive School Astronomy Club. “It's going to start turning red at about 10:30.”

The eclipse itself is expected to reach totality at 10:42 p.m., and last until roughly 11:30 p.m.

As for the blood moon moniker, it means the moon will have a red colouration during the eclipse.

Not only is the blood moon event rare, but this could also be the only time for a while people in Weyburn experience an eclipse like this.

“It is the only lunar eclipse of 2019 that will be visible from Weyburn, so we’re really excited about it,” added Kennedy-Allin.

The next lunar eclipse visible from Weyburn will be a partial lunar eclipse in July of 2020.
