The cold weather has many residents in the southeast feeling down, but some people are more sensitive to the short, winter days than others. Seasonal Affective Disorder, or SAD, is a type of clinical depression that can last from autumn till spring.

"I would recommend that if somebody is feeling blue and isolated and not themselves that they seek an appointment with their medical doctor and also call mental health in their region," said Christa Daku, Executive Director of Envision Counselling and Support Centre.

Daku added that doctors may refer patients feeling affected by SAD to a nutritionist. Light therapy is another option for those affected by SAD.

Daku said that taking a vitamin D supplement can also help during the winter months, as the lack of sunlight can cause health issues.

For those seeking relief from SAD or other issues, Envision offers a variety of therapy options, including an upcoming workshop called 'Minding your emotions'. Another resource in the community is the local Canadian Mental Health Association office.
