Weyburn has a bylaw on the books which prohibits fighting, and the Weyburn Police Service is reminding the community of it. The reminder comes after an altercation on Friday between two teenage boys which the police intervened in.

Deputy Police Chief Rod Stafford explained the bylaw doesn’t just prohibit fighting.

“There are also offenses in the bylaw to make it an infraction to encourage a fight, so stand on the sidelines and encourage a fight, or to videotape a fight,” Stafford stated.

The penalties under the bylaw are a fine of $500, for fighting, videotaping a fight, or encouraging a fight.

Stafford stressed the bylaw isn’t the only legal trouble a person could find themselves in. Depending on the circumstances, there could be assault charges, or potentially more severe charges, laid under the criminal code.
