The Weyburn Police Services initiative, "This Ride's On Us" has been available for just over a month now. Hoping to prevent impaired driving the program allows participants to enter their names into a draw for prizes. Over the past month, the initiative has seen about 40 individuals accessing the program.

"It's an awareness campaign with a little bit of a twist, so it looks like maybe it has a little bit of impact or it has so far," says Weyburn Police Chief Marlo Pritchard. "We'll see where it goes, I mean it's only been a month so the measurements will continue for the next month, we are hoping, it's still early, that we will extend this program to the end of the year."

Friday, October 13th, saw the first grand prize giveaway for those entering the draw, by using the program. Weyburn's Rickee-Lee won two watches courtesy York Jewellers.

"I was pretty excited to be involved in this, I think it's a well worthwhile project to be in the middle of and I'm hoping we continue to do this the next year as well," says Al York, Owner of York Jewellers. "I think that if you keep one person off the road from drinking and driving it's well worth it."

Chief Pritchard also mentions that Weyburn has really embraced this program and that the WPS believes they have seen an increase of people leaving their vehicles at establishments after a function. Even if people aren't taking advantage of the program it is important that people are aware of it and making better decisions during a night out. There have been private functions requesting to use the initiative as well. Hopefully, this incredible program can be continued past its two month planned date.
