The Royal Canadian Legion Number 47 in Weyburn hosted their first ever Trivia Night fundraiser on Friday. The fundraiser is part of paying off the heating and cooling system they were forced to install three years ago.

"With its age and everything else, we had no choice but to have to replace the entire heating and cooling system within the facility, so now we are in the process of raising funds to pay off the $150,000 hit we took in replacing it, but we do have a state of the art heating and cooling HVAC system now," explained Secretary Manager Connie Nightingale.

With space for 40 teams in the Vimy Room, Nightingale said their turnout was still quite good for their first event, which was emceed by Jessica Jack.

Everyone had a good time on Friday night, with some teams even answering three quarters of the questions correctly (photo courtesy of Tara Neuberger).

"We had 12 teams, which was a great beginning for us, and I know everyone had a really great time," she shared. "There was 10 categories, and there was 101 question-points to be had in the end, some teams coming in in the 70s or even in the 60s, so we sure do have some Trivia Masters in our community."

For the inaugural event, the 'Middle Age Disappointments' took home the title of Legion Trivia Masters.

"This was our first Trivia Night," Nightingale noted. "We have hosted Trivia Nights in the past, but this was the first time the Legion has put their stamp on the Trivia Night and making it our own. We plan to do one monthly going forward, we're looking forward to preparing one up for late February, as a matter of fact."

While some order questions for their trivia event fundraisers, the Legion is saving on overhead costs (up to a dollar per question) by writing their own trivia questions.

"We had the Simpson's trivia this time around, the longest running cartoon in history," she shared. "We had lots of good pop culture, but then too we had lots just keeping it close to home. Our very first trivia category was Saskatchewan monuments."

While the fundraising potential isn't huge on a per-event basis, each monthly event will help in paying off the HVAC system.

"It is just little chunks toward a really big bill," Nightingale noted. "But at the same time we're having a lot of fun doing it, it's bringing people into our facility, and we're sure enjoying ourselves."
