It was havoc on the highways in southeast Saskatchewan last night, thanks to a system carrying freezing rain which moved through. Accidents forced the closure of a number of highways, while crews tried to clean up the scenes, and make the roads passable.

Reports of multiple accidents on Highway 6, between Milestone and the junction with Highway 306, resulted in the highway being closed for the stretch. It was closed around 5:00 p.m. and was re-opened just after 10:00 p.m. The RCMP reported there were no serious injuries resulting from the multiple accidents.

Highway 48 was also closed for a few hours in the evening due to multiple accidents, from the intersection with Highway 35, near Odessa, to White City. Again, there were no reports of serious injuries as a result of the accidents.

The freezing rain also created extremely icy conditions in some communities. On social media, there are videos of people skating on streets in Regina, as well as struggling to stay upright while walking.

The system has passed through the region, and crews have been working overnight to improve the highways. You can keep up to date with the latest highway conditions by checking the Discover Weyburn road report.
