Weyburn residents could see higher water bills before the snow flies again.

That's because the provincial and federal government have promised up to more than $4 million in infrastructure funding for the City of Weyburn which the City plans to use for upgrades to its service lines and water meters.

Mayor Marcel Roy explained the new water meters are what will cause the higher bills.

"(The water bills) are probably going to go up a little simply because the internals are not functioning properly at this point and it's simply not that the City is putting up the water rates. It's just that the water meters (will be) functioning and working properly," he said. Roy added that the current water meters are roughly 30 years old and he recently learned at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities water meters have an expected life span of 20 years.

Also, roughly 200 to 250 homes in the City still have lead pipes leading into their homes. The project is going out for tender and the work could begin as early as this fall.
