A number of minor hockey players from Weyburn and area were treated in hospital for what appears to be carbon monoxide poisoning while playing in a tournament in Montmartre Saturday.

The tournament, which included two atom teams from Weyburn, as well as a teams from Montmartre and Kipling among others, was for Atom aged players.

There is no confirmation at this time from the Weyburn General Hospital, where some of the players received treatment, or from the Saskatchewan Health Authority, as to the number of players affected.

SaskEnergy confirmed they were called by the Montmartre Fire Department, and tested the levels of carbon monoxide. Elevated levels were found in the rink portion of the arena, and in the lobby. There were no sources of carbon monoxide due to leaks. The technicians from SaskEnergy suspect the cause of the issue cropped up due to the ice cleaning machinery at the arena, and improper ventilation as vents were closed due to the cold weather.

According to Health Canada, symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include tiredness, headaches, shortness of breath, dizziness, chest pain, nausea, poor vision and difficulty thinking.

Anyone experiencing carbon monoxide poisoning symptoms after suspected exposure should seek immediate medical assistance.

We will have more information as it becomes available.
