The Saskatchewan Legislative Building has received a very distinct honour. This week, it became the first legislative building in the country to receive the Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification.

The Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification program looks at a number of factors above and beyond the building codes and is also based on the experience of people with disabilities. The certification process surveys things such as vehicle access, interior and exterior access, signage and more. There are numerous mandatory requirements the building must meet, and then score above 60 percent.

"The Legislative Building belongs to all of the people of Saskatchewan and this certification demonstrates our commitment to making it accessible to everyone," said SaskBuilds and Procurement Minister Jim Reiter. "Saskatchewan has proven itself to be a leader by becoming the first province in Canada to have its Legislative Building receive this certification."

The Legislative Building was built in Regina between 1908 and 1912 and sits on the shore of Wascana Lake.
