Every year, eHealth Saskatchewan releases the list of the 20 most popular baby names, for boys and for girls. The list for 2018 was released Tuesday, and there wasn’t much of a surprise at the top of the list.

For the ninth year in a row, Liam was the most popular name for a baby boy in the province. There were 84 baby boys born in the province last year with the name. For girls, the most popular name for the second year in a row was Olivia, with 69 baby girls given the name.

There were three baby boy names which made their debut in the top 20 in 2018. Ryker, Emmett and Elijah were all on the list for the first time since the list started being compiled and released in 2008. Two new baby girl names were on the list - Ellie and Ivy.

There were several names which were popular in 2017 which weren’t on the list of the top 20 most popular names in 2018. For boys, this included Asher, Daniel, Gabriel, Hunter, Leo and Oscar. For girls, names which were no longer on the list included Addison, Aria, Brielle, Madison and Quinn.

Last year, there were 15,364 live births registered in Saskatchewan. This was down from 2017 when there were 15,609.
