A work by Weyburn's own Jaynie Himsl will soon be touring with the Grand National Fibre Art Exhibition.

The exhibition will even make its way to Weyburn later this year, for dipslay in the new Weyburn Arts Council Gallery at the Credit Union Spark Centre.

"We're very fortunate that our Curator here said, 'yes, yes, let's bring it here to Weyburn'," Himsl said. "It's pretty cool. Even if I hadn't got in, it would be just cool know to know it was coming, and having a national level show coming to Weyburn, it's exciting. Very exciting."

The two-year cross- Canada tour begins this April in New Brunsick, following an adjudication to award Best in Show and more.

She shared how she was originally inspired to become a fibre artist.

"It was an exhibition by Martha Cole that came to the the Allie Griffin over 10 years ago," said Himsl. "That was a spark for me, because I'm not that great at following instructions for quilting and matching and such, but when I can make my own rules for art quilts, that was the niche. My niche."

Himsl said she is more of an artist than a quilter.

"I just happen to hang around with quilters, but I'm an artist much more, I make my own from my own head and my own inspiration and figure out how to show what I want to show. That's where I fit. Yeah, and I paint with fabric, for sure," she said.

As for that niche of fibre artists, Himsl said they all learn from one another, and there really is quite a number of fibre artists in Saskatchewan and in the world.

"To the general population we're often new to many people," she commented.

She noted that the great thing about fibre art is you can source your materials anywhere, including from a blouse you like at the thrift shop. Plus, since art doesn't need to go through the laundry, as opposed to most fabric creations, you don't necessarily even have to know how to sew, with many great bonding products available on the market.
