Next month Weyburn will be hosting a Safety Refresher course for mature drivers. The Saskatchewan Safety Council and their partners SGI will host the program at no cost to anyone wanting to attend.

The clinic will be held at the Wheatland Senior Centre on October 15. The only stipulation is you have to be 55 years of age or older.

Merissa Scarlett is the Community Relations Coordinator for the Saskatchewan Safety Council. Their goal is the prevention of any and all injuries in Saskatchewan. She says that it's a great way for older drivers to check up on the rules of the road.

"As we age, things change. Whether that be the rules of the road or your own body. Everything changes. So this refresher course is offered to older drivers, just to give them a chance to ask questions about these changes and the new rules of the road," she said. "It goes over a tonne of topics about driving safely."

Scarlett says the program will also go over some great tips in dangerous scenarios.

"It also gives some review on what to do in a hazardous situation. It will give some refresher tips on how to navigate out of a skid as well," she said.

A 2009 study published by Statistics Canada revealed that over 75 percent of Canadians over the age of 65 drove regularly. Roughly six percent of those were aged 85 and older. There are differing studies about the connection of age and the likelihood of getting into an accident. While Scarlett says she is unaware of the exact stats, that isn't what the course is about. It's a way for mature drivers to become more clear on the everchanging rules of the road.

According to Scarlett, people who've attended the course in the past thoroughly enjoyed themselves. It's a relaxed atmosphere to help learn. There's no tests or anything like that.

"It's a lot of fun. People who have attended the class have had a great time. They've learned a lot and it doesn't affect your license at all. It's just a bonus course to add to your knowledge," she added.

Anyone interested in the course will have to register. You can call Karen at the Wheatland Senior Centre to reserve a spot in the program.
