A release from the province this morning says going forward, the number of liquor stores a city can have will be determined by population.

This means for Weyburn, there can be up to five liquor stores, whether publicly or privately owned. Weyburn Mayor Marcel Roy said he has heard from residents there is a want for more locations.

"People have talked to me on the east side of town. I think there's a want over there because there's nothing over there on that side," said Roy.

The city currently has three retail liquor establishments, although there were four prior to the closing of the King George in 2017. Mayor Roy said there could be room for more establishments in Weyburn in the future.

"With the recent sale of King George, I'm sure that they'll be wanting to go for a license, and that's something they'll have to talk about," explained Roy.

Roy also added the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Association already has its hands full with other regulations.

"Hopefully, the province isn't too overly-concentrating on having issues with opening all the pot stores." he added.

It seems whether or not Weyburn needs more liquor stores will be something to think about in the future.
