After just a few days of sunshine and above normal temperatures, it seems like Jack Frost wants to make another visit to southeast Saskatchewan. Environment Canada is calling for cooler temperatures, rain and snow to make their return to the region over the next few days.

“We’ll have increasing cloudiness coming in and a chance of showers, then rain or snow starting for real later in the day,” explained Environment Canada’s Natalie Hasell. “The reason for this is a passage of a cold front and another system coming up from the south.”

With the system expected to hit in the evening hours, it means rain before subzero temperatures. This could result in some less than ideal driving conditions on the highways in the region.

The precipitation is also coming while agricultural producers have been racing to get the 2019 crop off the field. Improved weather conditions have helped over the past few days, but there is still a lot of crops to be harvested in some parts of the southeast, and across the province. High winds expected for much of the week won’t be much of a help either.

The system bringing the precipitation does appear to be short-lived, however.

“You’re going to be into snow or flurries well into Thursday, and then it should warm up enough on Friday, temperatures getting above zero, so things falling on Friday should be wet instead of frozen,” added Hasell.

Before those warmer temperatures hit, though, Hasell warned we could see a bit of an accumulation of snow.

“Depending on exactly where that front and that low line up, some areas may see slightly more intense amounts of precipitation, but this five, ten, fifteen centimetres of snow is over several days.”
